The Backstory: My demo of this song went viral on Instagram because troll and parody accounts picked it up and picked it apart. It was one of the greatest things that's ever happened to me, because as the song got shared, tons of really creative people disagreed with the trolls & entered Oakland to enjoy my music with me. Even in the middle of what will probably be endless internet bullying considering the fact I'm not going to change my music style all that much (lol), I don't feel alone or discouraged at all, because of all these supportive, fun, new listeners.
See, "Override" was the very first song I committed to sharing the actual behind-the-scenes of my songwriting process, after a year of sharing content about my dad and my ED recovery music origin backstories to, admittedly, kill time while figuring out how to share my music more directly on social media. I wrote "Override" on a random Monday and shared it immediately as I drafted the lyrics and recorded takes to get the demo - and then this whole thing happened.
And in case you don't know:
All of this beautiful chaos lately has been making me think about how I started doing social media in winter 2022 after my dad died - because in his last minute of life he communicated to me that he wanted me to be okay. In another conversation months earlier when his health was declining, he told me he wished I was more confident. Sharing my music on social media not only pushed me out of my comfort zone and challenged all my previous, limiting, negative judgements -- but it's also improved my quality of life and increased my self-confidence to share my music like this, especially amongst a sea of trolls aiming to shake me, to no avail. Social media is weird, but it's become another art playground and philosophical, psychological battlefield. And I'm happy about it right now. Thank you for listening and being here with me in Oakland.
