about

I wrote and recorded this in a day. I didn't have the poetry of spoken language alone to handle my mind the night that coronavirus really arrived in the United States, with the first school closings and event cancellations, so I wrote this based off a riff I woke up humming earlier that morning.

Even if we're lucky enough to stay distanced from it, this pandemic forces us to face the idea of death, and I'm usually very comfortable with that subject. My father's been sick since I was little, so I've thought a lot about it. I also tend to believe deaths happen when we're living, in a deep sense. But this week I was shaken by the gravity of how we can deny or not know that something is wrong, and so we don't communicate something we should have before time runs out. That's what this song is about.

Since life is imperfect, the song ends on a note of remembering humans make mistakes, so hopefully you do the best you can and remember that.

Our problems can be so first world, and unfortunately it can take something massive to wake us up to that.

lyrics

lyrics:

And if my body’s ticking down
Into the gravity now
Can we slow dance till my bones can’t take it
Across the miles

Before the sickness, I knew dying
First mind, then body follows suit
Will you read the books I’m writing
To come home to you

What if I don’t know when I'm dying
And it comes on too quick to
Tell you I was always trying
To come home to you
Can’t be too late to

And if my body’s ticking down
Into the gravity now
Can we slow dance till my bones can’t take it
Across the miles and the sound
And I know you don’t know
And you know I don’t know, too
In the pages I wrote
In the only way I knew
To come home to you

And if my body’s like that
What if my body’s like that

My paper and my ink
Fingers and my screen
Someone call me out
On this dumb badge shining
Paper and my ink
Fingers and my screen
Someone call me out
On this dumb badge shining
Paper and my ink
Fingers and my screen
Someone call me out
On this dumb badge shining
Paper and my ink
Fingers and my screen
A first place masochist
For first world nonsense
You’re gonna die with this
Are you gonna die with this

And if my body’s ticking down
Into the gravity now
Can we slow dance till my bones can’t take it
Across the miles and the sound
And if my body’s ticking down
Into the gravity now
Can we slow dance till my bones can’t take it
Across the miles and the sound
And I know you don’t know
And you know I don’t know, too
In the pages I wrote
In the only way I knew
To come home to you

And if my body’s like that
I didn’t mean to hold back
I'm only human like that
